Scania entered India in 2007 through a joint venture with Larsen & Tourbo to manufacture their heavy duty mining tippers in the Indian mining industry. In 2011, they established their Indian wing, Scania Commercial Vehicles India. In 2011 Scania had announced its expansion plans in India.

The company is now planning to set up a Complete Knock Down (CKD) assembly unit in Narasapur Industrial Area, Bangalore.

Henrik Fagrenius, Managing Director, Scania, said, “This unit will enable us to shorten our lead times and enhance service levels to our customers. This will also go a long way in sourcing of components locally from India”, he added.

Scania will employ up to 800 people in its Bangalore facility over the next five years. The new plant will function as a CKD assembly unit during phase 1 of operations. Bus body building of city buses and coaches and service workshops for trucks and buses will also be included in this facility later on.

Scania intends to make this plant a complete manufacturing plant in future .

Henrik Fagrenius added,  “This investment furthers Scania’s committed to the Indian market and this is the right moment for us. With the commercial vehicles segment likely to register a higher volume growth of 8-10 per cent this year, the outlook for the industry is very promising.”

Scania aims to roll out 2000 heavy haulage trucks and 1000 inter-city buses and coaches in the next 5 years.

1) Stay home. Don’t go out unless you have to. Even if you implement every safety tip below, you still run a higher risk of running into someone who isn’t following these tips or is driving drunk. Every night there are reports of people killed by a drunk driver that were on there way home – it isn’t worth it. If you don’t need to go out, don’t.

2) Don’t drink and drive. You may think you hold your liquor well, and that you won’t get arrested or be over the legal limit in your state, but it is a proven fact that any alcohol in your system will slow down or impair your reflexes. What if something happens where you will need to react quickly? Its not worth the risk. Get a designated driver. Everyday there are families torn apart by a drunk driver who thought they could handle driving. Alcohol also impairs judgement and will make you think you can drive when you shouldn’t. Don’t drive drunk – and don’t let others drive drunk. Contact MADD if you have questions on this.

3) Fix, repair, restore your headlights so they work like new. It amazes me when I see people driving at night with very dim headlights. If you can barely see, how safe do you think that is? Your headlights are the number one safety feature for night time driving. If you need new bulbs, get them (they only cost around $10 each). If your lenses are cloudy, scratched, worn get a headlight repair, cleaner, restorer kit (see the authors link below). These kits will return your headlights to like new condition and save you hundreds over replacements. Having worked on a volunteer emergency squad, dim headlights were only second to drunk driving in the number of accidents we dealt with – and they tended to be the most severe. There is no excuse for having dim headlights – get them fixed.

4) Don’t drive on bald or worn tires. This is especially true for driving in the rain. Bald or worn tires can cause your car to hydroplane and lose all control almost guaranteeing an accident. Take a penny and make sure you cannot see the presidents head, else replace the tire. Also have them properly balanced and rotated at least once per year. What good are good reflexes if your car won’t respond correctly?

5) Replace windshield wipers every spring. When it rains, especially at night your visibility is reduced. Ineffective wipers will further reduce your vision and increase your risk of an accident. Some auto parts stores will even install them for free – take advantage of this.

6) Have your battery checked at every oil change. This will reduce your chances of being left stranded on the road in the middle of the night. More pedestrian accidents happen this way. The other driver is less likely to see you and pedestrian accidents are awful. You will not win with a 3000 pound car going 50 mph. For emergencies pack a flashlight in your car and a reflective vest so you can be seen.

7) Take advantage of driving classes offered by local companies, the DMV and your local police.

Wear your seatbelt. Working for an emergency squad, you see the grimm results of victims not wearing their seat belts – being thrown from the car – this resulted in many deaths, paralization, severe burns and disfigurment, etc… I’m sorry if you find it uncomfortable, but if you are in an accident it will increase your chances of survival and decrease the severity of the accident. Wear your seat belt.

Many people think the police are just out to give tickets, but who would want to have to pick up severely injured children or worse. They see this stuff too often and then they have to go home to their families. When I was working at the volunteer emergency squad we found even the toughest cops would cry at some of the accidents we were called to. State Psychologists were sometimes assigned to help the police, emergency medical personnel, etc… as the accidents would be so traggic and they could have been easily prevented by some of the above tips. Please don’t drink and drive, wear your seat belt and drive safely.

My wife and I own two Toyota’s. A 1997 Toyota Tacoma 4×4 V6 and a 2002 Toyota Sequoia V8 4×2. Neither of these vehicles are now for their thirst resistance. The Tacoma has a rating of 16 MPG Town and 20 MPG Highway. The Sequioa is a bit worse with a 15 MPG Town and an 18 MPG highway. In today’s climate these gas mileage totals can really crimp your budget. So how do you improve on them if you want to pinch pennies. Currently the two vehicles achieve the following ratings when I am driving them:

Seqouia gets 18.9 MPG city, and 19.5 Highway.
Tacoma gets 20.0 MPG city, and 21.5 Highway.

These are outstanding figures when compared to the factory figures for Gas mileage. So how do I achieve such figures. The methods are fairly simple and very doable with any vehicle that you may have. I routinely achieved 36 mpg with a 1988 Honda accord while in college. All with no modifications to the vehicles that I drive.

Gas savings tactic number one is simple and highly doable if you can avoid a heavy foot. Always start out slowly avoiding rapid acceleration. Rapidly accelerating takes more energy for the car to start rolling and in the end simply uses more fuel. So how do I know if I am accelerating at a rate that is going to suck fuel irresponsibly. Very easy if you are driving at a nice pace you will barely notice the car changing gears. If you noticeably feel the car lurch during gear changes, you are accelerating too fast and wasting precious fuel in the process.

Tactic number two involves stopping. This is counter intuitive but as you approach a stop sign or other intersection release your foot from the gas peddle 400 yards from the stopping point. Allow the cars engine to slow it to the sign. You should arrive at the sign almost at a stop without applying a lot of brake force. If you do this correctly you will barely notice that you are applying brakes as you coast to a stop. This will prevent you from over accelerating and having to waste energy while braking.

The final item that I use for saving gas is the cruise control. When on the highway I accelerate to between 65-70 mph and then set the cruise. This prevents me from running with traffic and driving beyond the cars gear ratios. This will take some experimentation on your part as all cars are geared differently. My 88 Accord functioned best at 62 mph. Considerably less than the Seqouia’s 68 mph optimum cruising speed.

So the best way to sum up the gas savings tatics I use are to drive sanely and safely. Keep a safe distance from cars in front of you and use your brake and gas pedal sparingly. Always plan your stops and accelerate slowly. It will put money in your pockets and save gas in the meantime.

The terms of the deal, initially announced in July, were completed Oct. 6, California-based Tesla said Wednesday in a regulatory filing. Tesla is modifying its lithium-ion battery packs, motors, power electronics, gearbox and software for Toyota’s compact RAV4 sport-utility vehicle.

“Its initial investment in Tesla, and now this payment, show Toyota has decided electric cars aren’t going to be fringe vehicles,” said James Bell, executive market analyst at Kelley Blue Book in Irvine, Calif. “Companies like Nissan and GM are heavily committed to electric-car programs, and it looks like Toyota has decided to step up its efforts.”

Toyota showed a prototype version of the electric RAV4 to U.S. dealers last week in Las Vegas. The world’s biggest seller of hybrid cars, led by its Prius model, bought a $50 million stake in Tesla this year with a goal of collaborating in battery-powered vehicles.

Tesla this month took over Toyota’s former joint-venture plant in Fremont, Calif., and is modifying technology used in its $109,000 Roadster sports cars for the compact Toyota SUV. The electric RAV4 is due by 2012, Toyota said in July.

The $60 million payment from Toyota is only for research and development work done by Tesla and not for components that will be eventually supplied for the vehicles, said Khobi Brooklyn, a spokeswoman for Tesla.

At today’s Paris motor show, Lotus has unveiled six full-size models models which, if successful, will move the company’s image and prices into Aston Martin, Ferrari and Porsche territory.

“Our plan is to change Lotus from its present position as a niche sports car company to a builder of a range of premium sports cars”, says CEO Dany Bahar, architect of the company’s new five-year plan.

A couple of the six new Lotus concepts are intended for production even sooner than the front-engined V8 Elite hybrid revealed as a styling model last week and proposed for 2014.

The new cars, whose launch is being accompanied by developments costing many millions to Lotus’s factories, design facilities, test track and motorsport activities, and there is to be a new museum and heritage centre. The work, which has already started, will involve “fully funded” expenditure running to £770 million over the next decade.

The models include a replacement for the Elise, an all-new Esprit, the Elite and a larger Eterne saloon based on it, a new Elan and even a new city car co-developed with parent firm Proton.

The automaker announced the recall after the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) opened a probe into steering problems in August, a move analysts said was aimed at heading off criticism that it was slow to respond.

“Hyundai’s pre-emptive action is fast enough to avoid any criticism in handling safety issues,” said Kim Byung-kuk, an analyst at Daishin Securities.

No accidents or injuries occurred as a result of improper assembly or loose steering connections, Hyundai said in an email statement on Sunday.

The vehicles were built from December 11, 2009, through September 10, 2010.
Hyundai sold 128,484 Sonata sedans in the period from January to August, 35 percent of its U.S. car segment sales during the period.

The company’s latest recall comes as the automaker seeks to increase production of the Sonata, its best-selling model in America, at its plant in Alabama.
