Perodua MYVI – cracking the European market
Perodua might not be one of the most fashionable brands on the market but their small hatchback offering the MYVI is making ground on British roads. Perodua is less well known in the European market but is the second biggest car manufacturer in Malaysia. The MYVI is a serious attempt to crack the European market and judging by performance and cost it may well have a chance.
Reviewers tend to be critical of cars like the MYVI. Its obscure brand and budget specifications make it easy to criticise but the fact is that it compares very favourably to other super-minis.
The MYVI is a tall car with plenty of headroom. It has the feel of a small MPV and can seat four people in relative comfort for a car of its size. The shape is best described as functional. It has an attractive bonnet and headlight design which unlike some other city cars, strikes you as purposeful rather than cute.
The MYVI is one of the most affordable cars on British roads and prices start at £7,497, unless you are wanting to look for a used one in which you could search on Motors.co.uk. For this you get a frugal yet perky 1.3 litre engine, which darts off the mark with surprising agility. The MYVI is comfortable and responsive at speed so has no problem with motorway driving. The engine is probably the MYVI’s best selling point.
It corners well and as a driver you feel central to the cars performance. Steering is nicely weighted and the ride is firm but comfortable. The driving position feels quite high and the sense of all round control is very good.
The interior is basic but again highly functional. There is a general sense of airiness due to the high roofline.
The MYVI may not win any awards off the critics but it is a quick little car that is fun and easy to drive, with no obvious shortage of power. It is surely one of the best value cars on our roads today.
